Egerton Ladies Choir
A Prestwich choir that was formed over 75 years ago will sing its last concert at 7.30pm on Tuesday 10 December 2019.
Egerton Ladies Choir was started by Miss Worsley, a local singing teacher, in her home in Egerton Street in Whitefield and it has taken its name from those origins. In 1940 it started out with 10 members but numbers increased greatly through the years. Ladies have never been asked to audition or even been expected to read music – just to enjoy singing together. But, over the last few years in particular, the choir has been gradually running out of singers. Illness, old age and work and family pressures have affected many singers and, sadly, there have not been enough newcomers to tip the balance. The choir meets every Tuesday evening during term time between 7:30pm and 9pm, at Heaton Park Methodist Church on Bury Old Road, Prestwich, which is where the choir also holds its concerts.
It has usually sung two concerts a year, often giving the exit donations to charity such as Ronald McDonald House or Bury Hospice. Over the years it has sung lot of two and three-part songs, ranging from traditional choral ones by composers such as Mendelssohn to more modern ones by John Rutter. Show tunes and the occasional pop number by Simon & Garfunkel or ABBA have also been sung. The concert in December will include songs from ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ as well as Hungarian, Philippino and Caribbean carols together with many old Christmas favourites, sung mainly in two parts for a change.
Valerie Clark, a member of the choir says: “We are all going to miss our Tuesday choir nights. Singing is good for you, and it can make you forget your worries. It is the end of an era for Egerton Ladies’ choir, and we hope our ‘swan song’ on Tuesday 10 December will be a night for us to remember.”
